Even in this fast-paced world of e-mail and instantmessaging, fax still reigns supreme for manycommunications tasks. Perhaps people just like the feeling of paper in hand,but in many organizations, the fax service won't be going away any time soon. Asa part of both the standard and premium editions of Windows Small BusinessServer 2003 (SBS 2003), Microsoft continues to include support for this older,but heavily relied-upon technology. Here's how to install and configure thisservice in Windows Small Business Server 2003 and how to send and receive afax.

Requirements and installation

To use the SBS 2003 fax service, your server must have aclass 1 fax modem dedicated to the faxing task. Of course, you also need tomake sure that this modem is connected to a suitable outside telephone linecapable of both placing and receiving calls.
If you didn't install the fax service during the serverinstallation, do so now. To install the fax service, go to the Add/RemoveWindows Components option available from the Add OrRemove Programs Control Panel applet. From the list of components, select FaxServices and click Next. (See Figure A.)

When you click Next, you're askedwhether or not you want to share the fax service's printer. Microsoft's SBS2003 fax service works by installing a fax printer on the server, which is thenshared out to selected users. Users install this printer and when someone wantsto print a fax, he just prints to this shared printer and is then prompted forthe fax information.
On the next screen of the fax service installation wizard,as shown in Figure B, you should optto share the fax printer. If you decide not to, you can share it later on justlike any normal printer.

The appropriate files are then copied from the SBS 2003 CDROM (you'll need the SBS CDs to install the fax service) to the server. Theseeasy steps complete the installation of the fax service. No reboot is required.

The Fax Service Manager is broken down into four sections:Devices And Providers, Incoming Routing, OutgoingRouting, and Cover Pages.

Devices And Providers

The Devices And Providers componentallows you to configure your fax devices and determine whether and how theywill answer incoming calls and whether they can make outgoing calls. Forexample, the modem that I have configured in my lab SBS 2003 machine isconfigured by default to just be able to send faxes. There are a couple ways toconfigure it to be able to receive faxes as well.
The first way is to use a shortcut menu. Just right-clickyour modem device (under Devices) and select either Auto Receive or ManualReceive. Auto Receive lets your fax modem answer every incoming call, whereas ManualReceive means you'll have to manually initiate the fax receive process. This isuseful if you use a voice line to occasionally receive faxes.
You can accomplish the same thing by right-clicking the faxmodem and selecting Properties from the shortcut menu, as shown in Figure D.

You can also enable Adaptive Answering, if your fax modemsupports this feature. Adaptive Answering allows your fax modem to determinewhether or not an incoming call is a fax call or a voice call and to actaccordingly. Not all modems support this feature, though. If your modem does,you can allow your fax modem to automatically answer calls and still share theline with voice services.
Until a modem is enabled for sending or receiving faxes,your fax service is a little useless.

Incoming routing

When a fax comes in, you can do one of three things with it:

Send it to someone via e-mail.
Store it in a folder on the server.
Print it to a network printer for someone to pick up.

Option 3 is the way that fax machines usually work and, inthis case, you turn your server, network, and printer into an integrateddelivery system. The order listed above is the order of priority for incomingfaxes.
To change the routing order, open Incoming Routing | GlobalMethods and use the up and down arrows on the toolbar to move the options upand down the list, a shown in Figure E.(What you can do with this once you have selected the order is discussed alittle later in this article.)

Outgoing routing

Outgoing routing is generally ready to go, since most of youwill only have a single modem in your server. This option determines the orderin which the modems will be used. Open Outgoing Routing | All Devices and lookin the right-hand pane to get a list of available devices. If you have morethan one device, you can change the order in which they are used by selectingthe device and using the up and down buttons on the toolbar. This can be usefulif you have multiple modems, with the first modem dedicated to faxing and asecond modem connected to a line it shares with voice calls.

Cover pages

A lot of businesses use standard cover pages for faxing. Youcan configure your own specific cover pages for faxing by using the Cover Pagesoption in the Fax Services Manager. Alternatively, you can just use one of thefour samples that is supplied with the service.
You can create a new cover page in two ways: Start fromscratch, or create a new cover page using an existing page as a template. To start from scratch, right-click Cover Pages and select New fromthe shortcut menu. To use a current cover page as a template,right-click Cover Pages and select Copy From... from the shortcut menu. Next,choose the fax cover page you'd like to copy and click Open.
You can also edit an existing cover page by selecting CoverPages. Right-click the cover page you'd like to edit and choose Edit from the resultingshortcut menu.
In any case, the Cover Page Editor opens. This program letsyou create custom cover pages with fields available that are appropriate for afax cover page. This program is a lot like WordPad, but includes an Insert menuthat has a number of different fields, such as recipient name, sender name,date, etc. In Figure F, you can seea screen shot from this utility with the Insert menu opened up.
When you're finished with your changes, save them and exitthe utility. You'll be able to use this cover page later when you send a fax.

Sending a fax

How can you easily send a fax using your new fax server? Simple!First, make sure that you are sharing the Fax printer device on your SBS 2003server. Next, add this "printer" to each client machine from whichyou would like to be able to send faxes.
With that done, open up a document you'd like to send andprint it to the fax device. The first time you do this, a client-based faxconfiguration wizard is launched. The first screen of the wizard asks for somepersonal information, such as your name, company name, address, etc. Thesefields are used later on to automatically fill out fax cover pages, so it'sbest to fill them out as completely as possible.

On subsequent sends, the Send Fax Wizard is automaticallylaunched and asks for recipient information, such as recipient name and faxnumber. Figure H shows a sample ofthis screen.

There are a couple methods for adding recipients to yourfax. If the recipient exists in your address book, you can look him up and addhim directly from there. Alternatively, you can manually type the recipient'sname and fax number, then click the Add button. In anycase, just click Next when you're done.
On the next page, you can select a cover page to use for thefax. If you opt to include a cover page, type a subject and note to be added tothe page. If you want to modify your personal information, click the Senderbutton and make the appropriate changes. When you're done, click Next.

Next, you can schedule your fax to be sent either now or atsome point in the future, such as when rates are lower or at some specifictime. Further, you can specify whether this fax should go first by indicatingits priority. Your options are high, medium, and low.

When you're finished making these selections, you can see apreview of your fax, if you like. In FigureK below, I chose to modify my sender information so that the fields wouldbe filled out.

Receiving a fax

Earlier, you set up a number of fax routing methods todetermine how incoming faxes are handled. Now, you need to be a little morespecific and tell the fax service exactlywhere to send this stuff. If you don't, incoming faxes are just lost. That'sbad.
Open the Fax Service Manager and select Devices AndProviders | Devices | { your device } | Incoming Methods. In theright pane, a list of the available incoming options opens up. Notice in Figure L that each one is marked asdisabled by default.

To enable a method, open up its properties page (right-clickthe method and select Properties from the shortcut menu) and click the secondtab from the left in the resulting window. For each method, a specificproperties window lets you select the appropriate option. For example, if youopen the Print method properties page and select the Print tab, you get a drop-downbox that lets you choose an installed printer to which all incoming faxes willbe automatically printed. (See Figure M.)

For the E-mail Incoming method, you need to provide a valide-mail address. Incoming faxes are then sent as TIF files to this address. Forthe Store In A Folder method, you need to provide afolder on the network to which incoming faxes will be stored as TIF files.

Outlook adds my name when I edit or Forward an email

I am facing an issue where my username automatically appears in the body of any email reply/forward.
Whenever I hit on the spacebar as the first character to start off editing of the quoted email message, my username will appear as [John] in the email message.
Is there any way to turn this off?

When answering in-line (meaning, in the original message), Outlook has the option to mark these comments. By default it will use your name, but you can configure it to something else and also simply disable this option if you don’t like it at all.

You can find this option by going to;

Outlook 2007 and previous
Tools-> Options…-> button E-mail Options…-> option group: On replies and forwards-> option: Mark my comments with

Outlook 2010 File-> Options-> section Mail-> option group: Replies and forwards-> option: Preface comments with

Internet Explorer user ID and Password Save Set Up

Configure the following settings in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to make sure that user id and passwords are saved.

Open IE 8.

1.    Go to Tools > Internet Options.

2.    Navigate to Content Tab.

3.    Click on settings button underAutoComplete.

4.    Put a checkmark on User names and passwords on forms.

5.    Also place a checkmark on Prompt me to save passwords.

6.    Click OK.

7.    On the General Tab make sure that theDelete browsing history on exit is unchecked.

8.    Click OK.

9.    Go to Privacy tab and drag the slider to the lowest so that it accepts all cookies from any website.

This should do the trick.

Most banking and other secure sites will not allow passwords to be saved. As such you may check on websites which have lesser security and see if user ID and password get saved.

Getting started: learning library basics
If you’re just beginning to use libraries or you already work with them but want a quick refresher, Microsoft’s four-minute screen-capture video, “Organizing with Windows 7 Libraries: Overview,” covers the basics.

MS TechNet offers good intermediate-level information in its Library FAQ and its “Windows 7 Libraries: Walkthrough.”

If you prefer a more technical primer, try the MSDN article, “Introducing Libraries.”

For the purposes of this demonstration, I created three example folders that I can add to a new library. I put each folder in a different place so you can see how a library aggregates folder content. To help keep things clear, I gave the demo folders blindingly obvious names. One is called SomeFiles and is in my Documents folder. Another folder, SomeGraphics, is in my Pictures folder. A third, SomeDifferentFiles, is a folder on my Desktop.

To work along with me as you read this article, you also need to select three folders in different places. (Why three? Because it’s enough for you to see what the Libraries feature is all about, without going overboard.) It doesn’t matter what the folders contain or what they’re named or even where they are; you can select folders from any location to which you have access, including networked drives — that is, drives on other PCs.

For simplicity, my demo folders are small, but yours need not be. In fact, libraries are most useful when you’re dealing with large folders with tons of files.

After you mentally select your three folders, it’s time to create a library.

Creating your library, step by step
Figure 1 shows Windows 7′s four default libraries: Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. There’s nothing particularly special about these default libraries. They’re just preconfigured examples you can use, delete, or change as you wish.

For this demo, we’ll create a new library from scratch. Right-click on the Libraries folder in the left pane, select New, then Library, as shown in Figure 2.

A new, generic Library icon appears in the left pane, and a text box opens to allow you to give it a name. (See Figure 3.) I called mine WS Demo for obvious reasons, but feel free to use any name you like.

When you click the new icon to open your just-created library, it’s empty — save for a button inviting you to Include a folder. (See Figure 4.)

When you click the Include a folder button, a standard file-browsing dialog box opens. Use it to navigate to, and select, whichever folder you wish to include.

In my case, I navigated to my Documents and selected the SomeFiles folder. You can see the result in Figure 5; SomeFiles (with its contents) has been added to the library.

Remember that no files have been copied or moved. The SomeFiles folder is right where it was before, unchanged. The library is simply giving you an alternate view of that folder.

So far, the library includes just one location — the folder we’ve just added. This is indicated by the 1 location text, as shown in Figure 6.

To add a second location to the library, click the 1 location text. The Library Locations dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 7.

When you first open it, the dialog box shows the library’s current contents. In this demo, you see just the SomeFiles folder, so far.

Click the Add button on the right side of the dialog box; a separate, standard dialog box opens to let you select additional folders for inclusion in the library.

I added the SomeGraphics folder (from my Pictures) and SomeDifferentFiles (from my Desktop), as shown in Figure 8.

Go ahead and add the folders you wish. When you’re done, click OK.

Your new library is now populated with folders and their files. The default view is shown in Figure 9.

Frankly, the library’s default view isn’t very helpful. It’s useful mainly when you’re in the process of adding or removing folders from a library.

The real power of libraries becomes apparent only when you select different Arrange by: filters, accessible via a pull-down menu in the upper right of the right-hand Library pane (you’ll see this in a moment). These filters let you sort the aggregate contents of your library in a variety of useful ways.

The filters depend on the types of content that the library detects. Yours may be different — and that’s fine — but in the demo, I have the Name, Date, Type, Tag, and Folder arrangement filters available.

Figure 10 shows the application of the Arrange by: Name filter to the demo library. Even though you’re looking at files from three separate locations (and even though no files have been copied or moved), this view lets you work with all the files as if they were in one, local folder.

Go on! Try the Arrange by: Name filter on your new library.

Try the other filters, too. Figure 11 shows the demo library contents arranged by Date; note how the library automatically groups files of similar age, regardless of location.

I won’t show the Type or Tags filters here, to save a little space in this graphics-heavy article. But arranging by Type can be useful when you’re trying to make sense of a very large collection of files and need to get a handle on what’s there.

Tags are extra, user-definable data. Some Tags are preconfigured, such as the star Ratings you can assign to music or photos. You can also create your own Tags for custom Arrange by: sorting. For more information on Tags, see the Microsoft article, “Add tags or other properties to a file.”

Powerful, custom searches via Win 7 Libraries
Alert readers might have noticed something interesting going on in the upper-right corner of the previous screen shots: the search box is already focused on the active library. (See Figure 12.)

Think about that for a moment: a search in a library automatically includes all the folders in that library. This means you can use a library to search across separate folders, drives, or even different PCs just as easily as if everything were local.

Libraries take some getting used to, but the more you use them, the more they grow on you. Give them a chance — especially if you have large hard drives, many files, or several networked systems. You’ll likely have Aha! moments of your own and find yourself a newly won-over convert to the subtle but considerable power of Windows 7 Libraries.

Bump performance in Windows 7 by trimming startup programs

several methods that you can use to investigate startup programs and eliminate some of them to improve performance. The minimum memory (RAM) requirements for Microsoft Windows 7 are 1GB for the 32-bit versions and 2GB for the 64-bit versions. However, we all know that the operating system runs better with more RAM. If you’re currently running Windows 7 on a system with only 1GB or 2GB of RAM, you know that the system can be slow at times — especially when you are running extremely memory-intensive applications.
Of course the ultimate solution would be to add another GB of RAM to your system, but what if doing so is not feasible at this point in time? Are you stuck with a sluggish system? Fortunately, you are not, as you can bump up performance by trimming back startup programs that may not always be needed. By preventing unnecessary programs from automatically starting, you’ll have more memory to spare for the programs that you do want to run.
In this edition of the Windows Desktop Report, I’ll show you several methods that you can use to investigate those programs that run automatically at startup. I’ll also show you how you can eliminate or at least temporarily prevent them from automatically starting up.

WMIC

You can investigate startup programs using a specially configured WMIC (Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line) command. WMIC (pronounced “WeeMek”) is built in to the Windows operating system and allows you to tap into a wide variety of application systems, hardware components, and operating system subsystems. Using a WMIC command, you can easily create a very nice HTML-based report of those programs that automatically start up on your system. You can then print the report to have on hand as you investigate whether you can safely eliminate any of those programs.
To create the report, open a Command Prompt window and type the following command:

wmic startup get /format:hform > startupreport.htm

When you do, the report will be created in a matter of moments. To access the report, just type the following in the same Command Prompt.

You’ll then see a report, similar to the one shown in Figure A, displayed in your web browser.

As you can see, the report is set up in a table and uses color to make it very easy to read.

Resource and Performance Monitor

You can also investigate startup programs using Resource and Performance Monitor. Click the Start button and type Performance in the Search box. When the results appear, select Performance Information and Tools. When the Performance Information and Tools window appears, select the Advanced Tools. When the Advanced Tools window appears, scroll to the bottom and select Generate a system health report.
When the Resource and Performance Monitor window opens, the utility will begin compiling its report, which will take about 2-3 minutes. Once the report is compiled, expand the Software Configuration section and scroll down to the Startup Programs section, as shown in Figure B.

System Configuration

You can investigate and disable startup programs using System Configuration. Click the Start button and type System in the Search box. When the results appear, select System Configuration. When the System Configuration dialog box appears, select the Startup tab, as shown in Figure C. As you can see, the Startup tab provides a straightforward listing of the programs that automatically start up on your system.

You can disable a startup program by clearing the adjacent text box. As you can see, the Startup tab makes it easy to keep track of those programs that you have disabled by recording the date and time they were disabled. When you click OK, you’ll be prompted to restart the system to activate your changes, as shown in Figure D.

Autoruns

If you really, really want to delve into a deep investigation of startup programs, there is no better application than Autoruns from Windows Sysinternals and Mark Russinovich. This tool, shown in Figure E, provides a very comprehensive look at all the places in the operating system from which a program can be configured to automatically run.

Troubleshoot driver problems in Windows 7 with Driver Verifier Manager

how to use the built-in Driver Verifier Manager to troubleshoot driver problems in Microsoft Windows 7. In a recent blog post titled “Troubleshoot Windows 7 Drivers in More Detail with Driverquery,” I told you about Driverquery and how you can use it to gather detailed information about all the device drivers installed on your system. Well, in addition to DriverQuery there is another tool called Driver Verifier Manager that you can use as a troubleshooting aid when you suspect that your problems may be rooted in a faulty device driver.
For instance, if you occasionally encounter unpredictable errors, lockups, or BSODs, there’s a good chance that your system is suffering from the effects of a faulty third-party driver. The device drivers that come with Windows 7 have a Microsoft digital signature that indicates that the driver has met a certain level of testing and that it has not been altered. Any hardware that carries a Certified for Windows 7 logo will come with drivers that have a digital signature from Microsoft, which indicates that the product was tested for compatibility with Windows 7.
However, not all third-party hardware manufacturers are willing to take the time and effort to submit their products to Microsoft for certified testing, and as such they aren’t really interested in having a digital signature from Microsoft assigned to their drivers. And, unfortunately, uncertified drivers can be a source of problems.
In this edition of the Windows Desktop Report, I’ll show you how to use the built-in Driver Verifier Manager to troubleshoot driver problems in Windows 7.

An overview

Windows 7 comes with two versions of the Driver Verifier Manager — a command-line version and a GUI version. I’ll cover the GUI version in this article. (If you want to learn more about the command-line version, check out this article on Microsoft’s MSDN site. You can also download a whitepaper.)
Once enabled, the Driver Verifier Manager will go to work in the background and will essentially perform a series of extreme stress tests on the selected driver(s) in an attempt to cause the driver(s) to fail. Keep in mind that the tests that Driver Verifier Manager performs will occur as you use your system over time under normal circumstances. As such, it may take some time to identify a problem, if there is one at all. In other words, this utility will not yield immediate results.
If the driver does fail, it will cause a BSOD and a Stop Error message that will contain information that you can use to determine and eliminate the problematic driver. If, after a few days, the driver doesn’t fail and cause a BSOD, then the driver may not be the cause of the problem. Either way, you will have to disable the Driver Verifier Manager once you are done troubleshooting.
Remember, that once you enable it, the Driver Verifier Manager will remain active in the background until you disable it. I’ll show you how to disable Driver Verifier Manager in a moment.

Launching the Driver Verifier Manager

To launch the Driver Verifier Manager, click the Start button, type Verifier in the Start Search box, and press [Enter]. When you do, you may encounter a UAC and will need to respond accordingly. You’ll momentarily see a Command Prompt window, and then the Driver Verifier Manager will launch and display a wizard-based user interface, as shown in Figure A.

As you can see, the Create Standard Settings option is selected by default, and in most cases this option is the best way to start. When you use this option, the Driver Verifier Manager selects a standard set of driver verification options.
If you later decide that you want to perform more specific tests, you can select the Create Custom Settings option. When you do, the Driver Verifier Manager will display all the available driver verification options and allow you to select the ones that you want to employ. This option is really designed for developers.
As I mentioned, you will have to disable the Driver Verifier Manager once you are done troubleshooting. To do so, you’ll use the Delete Existing Settings option.
As its name implies, selecting the Display Existing Settings option will show the driver verification options that have been activated and will list the drivers being tested.
Once you enable it, the Driver Verifier Manager remains active and performs its stress tests in the background. If you select the Display Information about the Currently-Verified Drivers option, the Driver Verifier Manager will display statistics on the utility’s current actions.

Using the Create Standard Settings option

Since the Create Standard Settings option is the most common way that you’ll use the Driver Verifier Manager, I’ll cover this option. When you click next, you’ll be prompted to select the drivers that you want to test, as shown in Figure B.

Since unsigned drivers are the most likely culprit, the Automatically Select Unsigned Drivers option is selected by default. If you select this option and click Next, you’ll see only those drivers installed on your system that are not digitally signed by Microsoft. If there aren’t any unsigned drivers, an error message will appear.
If you suspect that signed drivers designed for a previous version of Windows may be installed on your system and causing problems, select the Automatically Select Drivers Built for Older Versions of Windows option. If you select this option and click Next, you’ll see a list of drivers that are digitally signed by Microsoft but are designed for previous version of Windows — most likely Windows XP. If there aren’t any signed drivers for older version, an error message will appear.
While not really a very sensible option when it comes to standard troubleshooting practice, you can select the Automatically Select All Drivers Installed on This Computer option. If you select this option, the Next button will change to Finish and you’ll be prompted to reboot your system. (As a general rule of thumb, it is better to troubleshoot a single or a small set of possible problem drivers as it will be easier to determine the cause.)
If you want to see all the drivers installed on the system and be able to pick and choose which ones to test, choose the Select Driver Names from a List option.
On my test system, I selected the default option, Automatically Select Unsigned Drivers, and clicked Next. I then saw a small list of the drivers installed on my system that were not digitally signed by Microsoft, as shown in Figure C. To initiate the testing, I clicked Finish and was prompted to restart my system.

In the case of my test system, two drivers were unsigned.

It’s been several days, and I have yet to encounter a response from the Driver Verifier Manager. I suppose that it isn’t really surprising since I wasn’t encountering any unpredictable problems on this system. However, I am in the process of seeking more current drivers.

Resolution/Fix:
If you have not already you will need to remove the bad files from your print spooler.

Stop the printer spool service by right clicking on your My Computer icon and selecting "Manage"
Expand "Services and Applications" and the click on services
Browse through the list of services and find "Printer Spooler".
Right click on the "Print Spooler" service and select "Stop" if Stop is grayed out or disabled and "Start" is an available option, then the service is already stopped.
Go to the c:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers folder
You should see some files in this directory with a .SHD file extension or a .SPL extension you will want to delete these. In some cases you may see other files in this directory as well, and in general it is safe to delete them. Files besides the .SHD and .SPL should be backed up before you delete them to be safe.
You may either reboot the computer or Start the "Print Spooler" service manually.

Once your print spool is clear you can now proceed with the following on the trouble computer:
First you will want to turn off any advanced printing features for your printer.

Click on Start then control panel, and then Printer and Faxes
Right click on the HP Laserjet 1020 (or other affected) printer and select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Uncheck "Enable advanced printing features"
Click the OK button

With that done, you will also need to make sure that you do not create PDF print jobs that the printer may still not work with.

Open a PDF file with Adobe reader
Go to File and then Print
Look for the Advanced button towards the bottom left and click on it
You should see an option on this screen that says "Print as Image". Place a check mark there and press Ok.
You can now press the print button and it should work fine. Be sure to always check that "Print as Image" option before printing a PDF document.

Outlook 2010 makes searching your mailbox more efficient with two new features: the Search Contextual Tab in the Ribbon and the Search Suggestion List.

Search Contextual Tab

The Search Contextual Tab is displayed each time you click into the search box. It allows you to filter your search results using a variety of parameters, including:

· Subject keywords
· Presence of attachments
· Categories
· Sent date
· Flagged messages

· Importance

Search Suggestion List

The vast majority of searches contain a combination of keywords, along with the names of the sender or a known phrase in the subject line. Restricting results to a specific sender is a powerful filter that often helps narrow down results quickly.
In Outlook 2010, you will see a list beneath the search box when you begin a query. You can just type and then arrorw down to limit your search to mail from someone or with a specific subject. The results returned will be only those that show a match in the name (or subject) fields against your query!

How To Setup A Wireless Profile On Windows 7

Recently I wrote a post on how to connect to a wireless access point on Windows 7, but at some point you probably will have to setup a wireless profile manually on your Windows 7 computer, so now in this article I will show you how to do that.

On windows 7, and on most of Windows versions, the wireless bar is located at the right hand side of the system bar, close to the system clock:

click on “Open Network and Sharing Center” that should bring you to the control panel network management utility:

If you get a Ip conflict on your network you need to flush out the DNS on that systems.

n Microsoft Windows, you can use the command ipconfig /flushdns to flush the DNS resolver cache. Open the command prompt and type the following:

C:>ipconfig /flushdns
Windows IP Configuration
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

The above command will completely flush the DNS, deleting any incorrect entries too. You can also use the command ipconfig /displaydns to view the DNS resolver cache.

Turning Off DNS Caching under Microsoft Windows

If you experience frequent issues with DNS caching under Microsoft Windows, you can disable client-side DNS caching with either of these two commands:

net stop dnscache
sc servername stop dnscache

This will disable DNS caching until the next reboot. To make the change permanent, use the Service Controller tool or the Services tool to set the DNS Client service startup type to Disabled. You can permanently disable DNS Client by following the below steps:

Goto Start and click on Run.
Type Services.msc in the Run command box.
A window listing all the services will popup. Search for a service called DNS Client.
Double click on the listed DNS Client service and click Stop. Similarly, you can restart it by clicking Start.

Tuning DNS Caching under Microsoft Windows

You can modify the behavior of the Microsoft Windows DNS caching algorithm by setting two registry entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDnscacheParameters registry key.

The MaxCacheTtl represents the maximum time that the results of a DNS lookup will be cached. The default value is 86,400 seconds. If you set this value to 1, DNS entries will only be cashed for a single second.

MaxNegativeCacheTtl represents the maximim time that the results of a failed DNS lookup will be cached. The default value is 900 seconds. If you set this value to 0, failed DNS lookups will not be cached.

Flush DNS in Mac OSX

In Mac OSX Leopard, you can use the command dscacheutil -flushcache to flush the DNS resolver cache:

In Mac OSX versions 10.5.1 and before, the command lookupd -flushcache performed the same task:

How to configure the size limit for both (.pst) and (.ost) files in Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, and in Outlook 2003

It is recommended that the values between the MaxFileSize registry entry and the WarnFileSize registry entry, and the values between the MaxLargeFileSize registry entry and the WarnLargeFileSize registry entry be at least 5 percent (%) so that internal processes are not hindered from continuing.

If the value of the MaxFileSize registry entry ever exceeds the ANSI 2 gigabyte (GB) limit on either the .pst or the .ost files, the value will be ignored to limit the size to 2 GB to prevent corruption. The default value for the WarnFileSizeregistry registry entry is calculated to be 95% of the MaxFileSize registry entry for a UNICODE file, and it remains at 1,950,368,768 bytes for small ANSI files.

Note You can set the UNICODE limits beyond the values that are listed in the table. However, we do not recommend doing this because performance can decrease.

If .ost files or .pst files reach the limit that is specified in the WarnFileSize or the WarnLargeFileSize registries, the compaction function is triggered to try to reduce the size of the file to a usable level. When the WarnFileSize or the WarnLargeFileSize limit is reached, e-mail messages cannot be sent (provided that sent e-mail messages are stored in the Sent Items folder), and items cannot be copied or moved within the file. If the file is an archive .pst file that is used for AutoArchive, the AutoArchive operation will fail. However, e-mail messages can be deleted or archived from a .pst or from an .ost file that is currently being used as the default delivery location.

The following are some of the errors that may occur when files reach the maximums specified in the registries:

* When you try to move items to a .pst or an .ost file that has reach the limit, you receive the following error message:
Can't move the items. The file \.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need, and then permanently delete them.
* When e-mail messages are delivered to a .pst or an .ost file that are using Cached Exchange Mode, and the file has reached the limit, the Mailbox Cleanup wizard launches.

ZDNet published the results of some performance testing involving the current crop of browsers. During the course of my research, I stumbled across a tweak that I was at first hesitant to publish. After thinking carefully about it, I decided to do so. I’m glad I did. I have now heard from easily a dozen people via e-mail and in comments who say the improvement in performance for them is amazing.

Please read the original post (Is IE8 really fat and slow?) to get the full background. If you’re experiencing problems with IE8 being slow to load pages, especially when multiple tabs are involved, this might be worth a try. Because this tweak is simply registering a DLL that should have been registered as part of the IE8 installation, there is no harm that can come from trying this.

Here are the instructions.

FOR WINDOWS XP

1. Click Start, then click Run.

2. In the Run dialog box, type cmd and press Enter.

and distraction from getting real work accomplished. Here are some useful tips

1 Put email on a schedule

Instead of reading and responding to emails as they arrive, set aside
specific times of day for them. This can vary from one to three or four times
a day, depending on your situation. If you’re in the habit of monitoring
your email continually it may take extra effort to change your behavior,
but once you do you’ll soon find yourself getting more accomplished.
2 Get set-up for success
Once you’ve established specific times for email, set-up some new rules
for your email application to help. Instead of automatically checking for
new messages every minute, adjust your application to check at a more
appropriate interval. You can also disable delivery previews and sounds to
reduce email’s intrusion into your productivity.
3 Read it and deal with it
Some messages are simply information, but others require action. Make
a renewed effort to deal with emails as you read them—reply, file, delete,
or print. If you don’t, you’ll end of up reading the same message two or
more times. In fact, if you know in advance that an email will take some
concentrated effort, don’t read it until you have the time to deal with it.
4 Put the subject line to work
When you write an email, take a moment to ensure the subject line is as
clear and complete as possible. For example, “Need feedback on Jones
Sales Presentation (attached) by Friday” is much more productive than
simply “Sales Presentation Review.”
5 Make the subject the message
When your message is very short use the subject line for the entire
message. For example, “Reminder: Feedback on Jones Sales Presentation
Due Today (EOM).” Use End of Message (EOM) so recipients know the
body of the email is blank and won’t waste time opening it.
6 Keep your message focused
When most people read on-screen they tend to scan. Big blocks of text
discourage readers and information is more easily overlooked. Keep your
emails short, to-the-point, and clear. Here are some tips to help:
• Add a space between paragraphs
• Use bullet points to improve readability
• List action items (with names)
• Use separate emails for disparate topics

Burn DVD on Window 7 Pro

#1 - Download and install ImgBurn

Rather that try muddling through with burning the .ISO file with whatever tools you might already have installed, download ImgBurn and use that. That way we’re all on the same page!

#2 - Burn the .ISO file to DVD

OK, pop a blank DVD into your DVD writer drive (for now I’m assuming that you actually have a DVD writer, if you don’t I’ll show you something else you can do in a moment). With that done, fire up ImgBurn. SelectWrite image file to disc.

Point the Source to the .ISO file you downloaded and then click on the big button at the bottom-left of the window to kick off the disc writing process.

And then after a short wait, you’re done!

Now you’ve successfully burned the .ISO file to the DVD … congratulations!

#3 - Use the DVD

You can now use the DVD like any other OS install disc … pop it in the DVD drive of the system you want to install Windows 7 onto and boot up the PC and you should get that Press any key to boot from CD or DVDmessage. Press any key to kick off the proceedings!

Note: If you don’t get that Press any key to boot from CD or DVDmessage then you’ll need to dig out your motherboard manual and twiddle with the boot device settings.

This is basically an Internet Explorer 7 Website’s Security Certificate problem! You have to self-sign the certificate on the client computer or add the URL manually to the trusted security zone.
When you are trying to access a secure web page, you receive the warning message:"There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority."Or"Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept data you send to the server."To fix this issue, you can follow either of the methods:

Method 1:You have to install the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) self-signed certificate on the client computer. To do this, follow these steps:
In Windows Internet Explorer 7, click Continue to this website (not recommended). A red Address Bar and a certificate warning appear.
Click Certificate Error button to open the information window.
Click View Certificates > click Install Certificate.
Click Yes, to install the certificate, when warning message appear. Note: For Windows Vista users, right click on Internet Explorer icon. Select Run as Administrator.

Method 2:Add the URL to the Trusted Sites security zone:
Open Internet Explorer
Go to Menu bar > Tools > Internet Options.
Click Security > Trusted sites > Sites
Type the URL in the Add this website to the zone text box > uncheck Require server verification >Add > click OK
Click OK to exit.Now you have added the URL successfully into the Trusted Sites security zone.

To fix this try to boot from the XP home cd , do a repair on the current selected installation. in dos mode run bootcfg /rebuild. Build an XP-SP2 Recovery Disc

To prepare a recovery CD, you'll need: (1) an original Windows XP CD, (2) a valid Windows product key, (3) a collection of your most essential hardware drivers, and (4) a copy of your backup software so you can access your archived data.

The first ingredient, the Windows XP CD, may prove the most troublesome, simply because many manufacturers omit it in lieu of some sort of customized "express install" recovery disc. If Windows came preinstalled on your PC but the manufacturer didn't provide a full Windows XP CD, contact the company and ask for one (you did pay for it, after all). In most cases, you'll get one for free, no questions asked.

But you're not out of the woods yet. Now that Service Pack 2 is out and has been force-fed to most of the Windows XP machines on the planet, your pre-SP2 Windows XP disc may not do what you need it to. (This next step isn't necessary if you already have an SP2 installation CD.)

Here's the problem: Once you upgrade to SP2, you won't ever be able to install the original version of Windows XP over it; you have thus rendered the ancient practice of reinstalling the operating system impossible.

The solution is to create a new hybrid installation CD from your original Windows XP CD and a special version of SP2, a process known as slipstreaming. (Etymology: a term from fluid mechanics, also used in Star Trek: Voyager.)

To create a slipstreamed Windows XP-SP2 CD, first create a new folder called "xp" in the root folder of your hard drive. (You'll need about a gigabyte of free space.) Insert your original Windows XP CD, start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to your CD drive (usually D:\). Highlight everything in the root folder of the CD and copy it all to the C:\xp folder you just created.

Next, go to Microsoft's Web site and search for the "Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers." Download the 272MB file, WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2 -ENU.exe, and save it to a new folder on your hard drive, C:\sp2.

Open a Command Prompt window (Start | All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt), and then type this command at the prompt:

c:\sp2\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU /integrate:c:\xp

If all goes well, the process should take a minute or two and then conclude with a simple completed message box. (If it doesn't work, then your copy of Windows XP can't be slipstreamed.)

Like it or not, you'll need a valid product key to reinstall Windows XP or install any Microsoft service pack down the road. Without it, your recovery disc will be naught but a coaster for the cup of coffee you're likely to need.

You can find the 25-digit product key on the hologram-laden certificate of authenticity, on the Windows XP CD sleeve, or on the Microsoft sticker on your PC. If you can't locate your key, you can get one from your PC manufacturer or directly from Microsoft (provided that you can prove you own a valid Windows license).

Once you have the product key in hand, write it directly on the original Windows XP CD with a soft marker pen (and also on the CD-R you're creating here) so you won't have to scramble for it in a pinch.

If you want, you can set up what Microsoft calls an "answer file" to enter your product key automatically so you don't have to type it in later on. On your original Windows XP CD (Professional Edition only), navigate to the \Support\Tools folder, double-click on DEPLOY.CAB, and then double-click on Setupmgr.exe to open the Windows Setup Manager wizard. When prompted, choose Create a new answer file and then Windows Unattended Installation. For the User Interaction Level, choose Provide defaults; when asked about the Distribution Folder, answer No. Finally, you'll see a new window, into which you can specify defaults; select Providing the Product Key on the left, type your product key in the text fields on the right, and then save the unattend.txt file into your C:\xp folder. For more information, open the setupmgr.chm file, also found in DEPLOY.CAB.

The Windows XP SP2 setup files should now consume about 600MB , leaving about 100MB free when they are placed on a garden-variety CD-R. Use this space to include drivers for your most important hardware devices. You can download the appropriate drivers from the hardware manufacturers' Web sites.

In the C:\xp folder, create a new folder called DRIVERS, and then create a subfolder for each driver. For instance, create a VIDEO folder for your display adapter drivers, a NETWORK folder for your Ethernet or wireless-network adapter driver, and MODEM for your modem driver (if needed). Make sure to include all drivers and software you will need to get your PC connected to the Internet. Once your Internet connection is up and running, you'll be able to download the less-vital drivers, such as those for your printer and sound card.

To be certain all these drivers will work when you need them, don't use anything you haven't personally tested. And don't forget to expand any ZIP files or self-extracting EXE files now, so that you'll be able to access the individual driver files during Windows setup if needed.

Finally, if there's room on your CD-R, make a folder for your backup softwar

e so that you'll be able to get your data off your backup media. Likewise, include any SCSI, tape drive, or FireWire drivers you might need to access your backup devices.

Next, you make your recovery CD bootable by using IsoBuster (www.smart-projects.net/isobuster) to extract the boot loader from your original Windows XP CD. In IsoBuster, select your CD drive from the list, highlight the Bootable CD folder on the left, and then drag the BootImage.img file from IsoBuster to your hard drive.

Now it's time to burn a new CD. You'll need CD-burning software capable of creating a bootable CD, such as Roxio Easy Media Creator 7, PC Magazine's current Editors' Choice ( www.roxio.com ), or Nero Burning ROM 6 or later ( www.nero.com ). (Sonic Solutions is acquiring Roxio's software division, but there are no plans to change the brand name.) Just drag the entire contents of the C:\xp folder to your CD project, and then use the BootImage.img file for the boot image data (refer to your CD-burning software manual for details). When you're ready, burn the CD.

In Outlook, archiving is a way to back up or delete old items, such as e-mail messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, journal entries, notes, posted items, and documents. AutoArchive backs up items for you automatically by using either the default settings or settings that you specify. However, sometimes you might not want to worry about all of those settings and just archive an individual folder manually.

Manually archive a folder

On the Go menu, click Folder List.
Click the folder that you want to archive. In this procedure, the folder being archived is Home Networking.
On the File menu, click Archive.
Click one of the following options:
Archive all folders to their AutoArchive settings Allows you to use your AutoArchive settings to archive the Home Networking folder.

Archive this folder and all the subfolders Allows you to archive the Home Networking folder using the options available in the Archive dialog box.
In the Archive items older than list, choose a date from the date picker. In this example, items in the folder created before January 19, 2004 are archived.
To include items that you previously selected not to archive, select the Include items with "Do not AutoArchive" checked check box.
Note To see if items have the Do not AutoArchive this item check box selected, open the item. On the File menu, click Properties. On the General tab, verify that the Do not AutoArchive this item check box is selected.
To archive the folder to a file other than the default Archive.pst file, click Browse, and then specify a different file name, such as Home Networking Archive.pst, and a location, such as My Documents.
Note The default location for Archive.pst is C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\. A Personal Folders file (.pst) is an Outlook data file that stores items such as e-mail messages, contacts, calendar data, tasks, and notes.
Click OK.
The items in the folder are moved out of the folder and into the .pst file that you specified. To view the folder items again, open the .pst file.

Color Code Incoming Emails

Microsoft Outlook’s built-in formatting options such that mail sent directly to me appears in my inbox in light blue. You can change to any color.

Here’s how we do this…choose the Tools menu followed by the Organise menu item:

Next, click on Using Colours. I already have e-mail that is sent to me and me only appear in blue, hence the option to turn it off is available. Assuming that you don’t have this option enabled, click on the Automatic Formatting button at the top right:

By default, Microsoft Outlook provides a handful of automatic formatting rules, one of them is “Mail sent directly to me”:

Click on the condition button and in the From section type @elitebuyer.com

this will set the rule for all email comming from a certian email to be that color.

Outlook will do a pretty good job working out the conditions required to make this happen. For the sake of completeness though, click on the Condition… button to see for yourself:

As long as you have a tick beside the “Mail sent directly to me” rule, Outlook will colour-code your incoming e-mail:

This is yet another small and simple product feature that you may well have been aware of, however if it’s new to you, it could be of some use.

Change Office 2007 Product Key

I want you to know that I have no intention to hack into Office 2007,

I found the following solution on the Internet. This describes an other error, but it gave me the ability to reenter a new Product Key.

Follow these steps:

Close all Microsoft Office applications.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration

Note You may also find another subkey that resembles the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
If you find additional subkeys that reference Microsoft 12.0 registration, open each subkey, and then identify the product by the ProductName entry.
For example: ProductName=Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007
When you find the subkey for the product from which you want to remove the existing product license key, delete the following entries:
- DigitalProductID
- ProductID
Exit Registry Editor.

The next time that you try to run an Office application, you will be prompted for a new product license key. Then, you can enter the product license key.

Hit the "Install Now" button and you Office app, will be updated with the new key. After updating you can activate you Office app, without reinstalling it.

Sync iPhone 3g With Google Calendar

So first thing first, is to simple just signup via NuevaSync and create your username, email, and password. You will then receive an email confirmation which ofcourse you will have to validate your email.

Well lets get into syncing the service with your iPhone. this works with your iPhone and iPod Touch as long as you have version 2.0. If you do have it then it integrates with ease and NuevaSync provides you a more in depth step by step configuration once logged in. NuevaSync helps you along the way with your installation.

After you have confirmed your email, you will then be introduced to your dashboard. It is a fairly simple dashboard with 4 options, since we are just doing Google Calendar chose “Change” which is the first row. You will then just enter your Google email or Google account id in which you want to sync your Google calendar with.

Once that is done, go to your Settings within your iPhone and you will simple just chose Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Select “Add Account”.
Choose “Microsoft Exchange”
Under “Email”, enter the e-mail address you used for NuevaSync registration.
Under “Username” enter your NuevaSync username.
Under “Password” enter your NuevaSync password.
Under “Description” you can leave the default or enter a description of your choosing.

On the next page, turn off “Mail” and “Contacts”.
Tap “Save”

That is it, soon this service will sync with your calendar if not immediately. I found this to be very helpful and ofcourse to be more productive. Also NuevaSync will soon have exchange service for email and that I can’t wait.
